Matt and I went over to the new Power Estate today in the westside of Cowtown. Various Power brothers were in town helping out.
Pat Power had cut a 4ft by 2ft hole in the wall and I was shocked to see that the elder Power was going to install a 55 gallon aquarium in the wall!!!
It is like aquarium-mania has totally crept into my life (and obviously his too!) You know you've officially reach middle age when you get hard at the thought of walking into and spending time at a Jack's Aquarium and Pets store. I know... pretty depressing isn't it?
I'd really like to have had the ability to put in a 20 gallon but I just don't think the attic of love could handle one that big. Hell, I'd need a stand too and that can run ya big bucks.
Personally I'm hoping he just plunges in and does a marine tank instead of freshwater. A reef environment would look, how does one say, utterly balls rock'n built into the wall. Hell, I can't wait to see what the whole thing will look like when the wall is all closed up and finished.
Makes me feel all inadequate with my little 7 gallon tank now.

It all started as a plan to get a 25-30 gallon tank. I was eyeing the 75 gallon model, but figured 55 is still plenty huge.
I'm still debating the tank type. I think I'll stick with freshwater for now, until I'm feeling more comfortable with caring for a tank that size. And just think of how many bubbling plastic treasure chests I can fit in there!

Yeah. I was reading up on reefs. I didn't realize there's such a big gap to maintaining a reef environment from a basic marine one. Ack!
You can do so many awesome things with that size though. You could go the route with a lot of rock and plants (what I'd do) and hell, I'd find a plastic Enterprise (or something like that) and have it sunk.
But fish-wise, with that display space, the brighter and more colorful the better!!!

I'd like to biuld up the backdrop with a lot of rock, fake might be a better choice so it doesn't crash thru the floor.
A cheap plastic snap model kit should be fine in there, wouldn't it? I don't think plastic puts out any nasty stuff in the water. I was thinking of doing a little plane wreckage on the bottom. Yes, I'm a dork.

The fake rocks would work but look around for a deal (perhaps online). The kits I saw just for my 7 gallon would have been about $30 to do it. The rocks cost me a lot less and the one rock I found in the backyard.
I don't think there would be a problem with the plastic but I wouldn't introduce paint obviously.
You could do a shattered WWII plane(s). That'd be kinda of cool and probably look better than a modern one.
Or you could simulate the Challenger accident by putting pieces from a space shuttle model kit on the bottom. (Ugh. Did I just say that?)

They do have a snap space shuttle kit, and the thought did cross my mind. But I think an older plance would be cool, and a little more tasteful. Not much, but a bit!
