Lock Drama: The Next Generation

Domicile - In which Giga breaks a key in the lock

So we've had some problems with the back door lock.

The core never seemed properly installed, so it would rotate as you tried to turn your key.

Some days were better than others, "were" being the key word here.

The other day, Giga's key broke off on the outside so the lock is pretty much hosed.

Domicile - Pain in the ass screws

What makes matters worse is that the last two screws won't come out from the inside so we can replace the thing.

They are stripped and you just can't seem to get a flat head to stay there in the groove either manually or electric.

Balls!

Personally, I think maybe getting a quote to have a new lock installed, and all new locks/cores installed in the other doors might be a good idea.

Arrrrgh, whoever invented those type of screw heads needs to be sent to Siberia. What's the point of tamper-resistant screws that are accessed from the inside? If someone's already inside...
Get the biggest screwdriver that you can wedge into that slot and clear your evening of any other plans.

Two Ideas.

One, use pliers. Turn it fromt he outside.

Two, if you have a Dremmel, cut a new slot int he screw inside the thicker area. I did this on my mustang before they took it away to be totaled. The front emblem had these funky screws on it that a normal screw driver wouldn't screw. So I cut deep slots in the screws and used a regular old flat head. Just be careful not to make the cut too wide/sloppy or it may ruin the screw worse.

We've got these special screw/drill bits that are designed to dig and and do that.

I don't know if Giga has tried them or not though.

No. The special bits go in a hole you drill in the screw, which I can't do. I told you I need those vice grips from the basement. Then I will dismantle it. Or, alternatively, I will drive to Max's and borrow the dremel with cutting wheel.

I didn't know exactly what you wanted the vice grips for. You just you needed them.

Here's fingers crossed that you don't run into the problem we've encountered: the lock is too close to the door handle, and new, modern lock/handle combinations don't fit.

We currently use a screw driver to open the front door.
